Cc101- Balance act

(Zinaida, Sloane and Helena are from my current WIP-Dirge.This is my work, please do not take it as your own. Rights reserved and all that good stuff. )

Black marble surrounded the room, and fear gnawed on the edge of her subconscious as Helena took the first step into darkness. It whispering promises that she’d sink into the pool of obsidian if she kept walking. And here she would remain, spending the rest of her days as…

What had that other Upirior [Vampire] referred to her as? A ‘Midnight snack’?

She fought the urge to shudder and kept her eyes on the tiled floor, least her companion get a kick out of her nervous system going to hell. With every step she took it became more apparent that the Upiriors were all much too fond of their own intimidation tactics. Her footfalls echoed and pitched up to an embarrassing volume.

Sloane’s shoes hardly made a squeak. Bastard.

She peered out of the corner of her eyes at him. There was a flicker there, the ghost of a smirk tugging at his lips. “Mind sharing what you find so amusing?”

The smirk deepened then but he said nothing. Only indicated his head for her to look forward.

Had she been the red wolf, her hackles would be bristled. She bit the inside of her cheek, taking the edge off of her frustration, but did as he indicated.

Helena came to a halt as her breath caught in her throat.

A mahogany desk sat before them, littered with papers and files and books and yet still held the appearance of a controlled space. Behind the desk sat a woman Helena would have pegged as being in her late 30’s-early 40’s-under normal circumstances. She was not pale, but not dark of skin either. Tanned, but lighter than Tamara. Dark magenta locks lie straight from the top of her head to her cheek bones but waved down her shoulders and back. Her eyebrows were long, dark and thick but it did not detract from her beauty.

Circumstances as they were, however, were far from normal and this was not simply a woman. If the Upirior’s exotic looks hadn’t been enough to tip Helena off, the faint smell of incense lingering beneath her expensive perfume certainly did the trick.

Seemingly undisturbed by their entrance, the Upirior twisted the edges of the sheer black shawl draped around her shoulders as she read. Helena glanced at the cover and found herself unable to make out the title.
One thing was for sure, Sloane’s Mistress looked nothing like Helena had been expecting.

Deep brown eyes peered up and steeled her in place. Every basic instinct Helena had screamed for her to look down, away, anywhere else, but the woman’s hypnotic gaze held her captive.

The Upirior’s gaze flickered to Sloane and Helena felt she could breathe easier, immediately taking the opportunity to look down at the floor. Still, she could hear the amused smile in the woman’s voice.

“I imagine this does not, in fact, count towards your grocery duties?”

Helena blanched and reached out to clutch the edge of the desk to keep from fainting. Someone grasped her shoulders she made contact with the floor-Sloane, she imagined- then managed to steady her while keeping them both at arm’s length.

“Please, forgive me,” the amount of sincerity in the Upirior’s voice startled Helena as she eased out of Sloane’s grip. “It is not often one gets the opportunity to needle him, you understand.” The Upirior closed her book then and stood slowly, as if making the extra effort for Helena’s comforts.

That couldn’t be right; she decided she must have misread it somehow.

In practice

Zinaida was my first conscious Libran, and while this snippet shows some of that, I know there are much better scenes that I cannot use for the sake of the dreaded spoilers.

Any Questions? Comments? Want to put me in my place? Notice any Libran traits in your own Characters?  Have at people, floors all yours.

* Motto of the Libra

** Wish I could take credit for this, but Linda Goodman’s excellent book on Sun Signs was the first to associated Alice in Wonderland quotes with the Zodiac. I picked the ones I liked the most of her selection.

Oh, this is my cousin all over — especially the bit about “caller of shots” and “urbane”, “charming” and “refined”. She left podunk New England for London, dahling years and years ago. 🙂

Bethanie- If my mother could afford it, she’d be in Paris right now. *ggg* She has the most exquisite taste in clothing, jewelry and decor. She’s also very artsy which I guess helps with having an eye for that sort of thing.
