(Part of Joely’s 101 Ways to Love Your Characters)

June 22nd-July 23rd

*”I feel.”

**”Cry Me a River.”

***”I can’t express myself, I’m afraid.

Because I am not myself today, you see.

It is this, it is this that oppresses my soul.” – Lewis Carroll

Water, that works like quicksand.

Feminine.  Think Liv Tyler. And on the male side: Sylvester Stallone (…yeah, I didn’t see that.)

Cardinal.  When it comes to Cancer? Think “Mother Hen”.

The Crab. Once upset, they’ll scuttle underground for a time, better let them have their space. What you think those pincers are just for show?

Ruling Planet

The Moon. Phantom-wise, Haunting, beautiful. And in a constant state of change; waxing and waning.

Governing Anatomy

The Chest. Possibly aching from all the sobbing and heaving.

Preferred Allies

Taurus, Virgo, Scorpio and Pisces.

Polar Opposite- Suggested love interest?

Best Adversaries

Sagittarius, Gemini, Leo, Aquarius.

Chief Need/Want

Fatal Flaw

Positive Traits

Kind, loving, intuitive, imaginative, shrewd, cautious, protective and sympathetic.

Negative Traits

Changeable, touchy, untidy, clingy, has trouble “letting go”, tendency to get over-emotional.

Cc101-Crab in the Wolf

(Sloane and Helena are two other characters from my WIP-Dirge.This is my work, please do not take it as your own. Rights reserved and all that good stuff.)

Sloane eyed Helena as the red wolf entered the monastery. He waited as she took hesitant skittish steps towards him, wincing every time the her nails click-clacked against the linoleum. Her ears twitched to and fro while her eyes seemed to scan everywhere at once. Several times he saw her pause and take in the scents and as she came closer, he wasn’t surprised in the least to see her tail tucked between her legs.

She stopped at the seven foot mark, parked herself on the aisle and looked him straight in the eye.

It was a bold move, but one he could respect. “Still don’t trust me?”

The red wolf flashed her canines, but her attempt at a growl sounded more like a whine to his ears.

A humorless smile tugged at the left side of his mouth. “Fair enough, for now.”

The wolf’s eyes glossed, losing their intense razor-sharp focus, and the fur around the eyes eased while her right ear lowered.

“What? You expect this to be a one way street forever?”

Both of Helena’s ears lowered and this time she really did whine.

In practice

Sorry to cut the snippet short but that’s about as much of that scene that I can show right now. Besides, I got most of Helena’s Cancer traits out in those short few paragraphs. I did not consciously choose the sign for her when she was created, but it fits a hell of a lot better than I might have thought.

I’m not aware of any other Cancer characters that I have, but then, you never know.

Any Questions? Comments? Want to put me in my place? Notice any Cancerean traits in your own Characters?  Have at people, floors all yours.

* Motto of the Cancer

** Title of a Song, taken from Born on a Rotten Day by Hazel Dixon-Cooper

***Wish I could take credit for this, but Linda Goodman’s excellent book on Sun Signs was the first to associated Alice in Wonderland quotes with the Zodiac. I picked the ones I liked the most of her selection.

I always cackle hysterically when I read descriptions of Cancerians, because I am SUCH a Cancer. I mean, I am not a Believer In Things and would be only too pleased to call it all hogwash, except that it’s so eerily accurate. All of it. 0.0 No really – I already commented about the attraction to Scorpios and my first real love-love was a Capricorn…

Anyway, I was about to say I don’t have any Cancerian characters, when I realized that Lars probably is. He’s, like, over 7 feet tall, built like a boulder, long red hair, and … he Mother Hens everybody to death. Yup, that’s him all over. 🙂

Bethanie- HAH! I love when a character surprises you, and yes, a 7 foot tall “mother-ing” man would surprise me. *ggg* Hey, if you ever need a Beta-reader, I’m all yours. Your characters sound rather intriguing.

Scorpio fits me like a glove with the same eerie accuracy you describe. With only one really big miss-I get along just fine with Geminis. 😀
