What’s Your Sign?

February 13, 2009

So I’ve heard, it’s one of the most outdated pick up lines in existence.

It’s also the first question that runs through my mind whenever I meet someone intriguing. It doesn’t have to be Mr. Tall Dark and Intense in the back corner or the guy that just happens to catch my eye at the right time either. I want to know why the girl who I was just introduced to seems so chatty and open with me, a complete stranger. I want to know how much effect the aligning of the sun, moon and other planets on the day or his/her birth has to do with it. It’s also one of the first things I want to know about my own characters.

I admit, I usually try to guess, “play psychic” so to speak, before I’m told anything. It’s a secret game I play, running through various possibilities as I collect more and more information about the person. For the most part, my gut instinct is usually right. Of course,I have also been wrong more times than I care to admit. But then, that is part of the fun.The only way to really know for sure is to ask.

However, in my supposedly Christian Nation, one must be wary of how one might broach such a topic that will more often than not get one strange looks and long lectures about purging thyself of thy heathen ways. I usually skip around that by asking for their date of birth. Subtle, no? And not too personal for those shy folks that don’t enjoy talking too much about themselves.

Now, I’d love to sit here and tell you that I’ve committed the exact days that the sun shifts into each sign to memory but, nope. Not a liar. Nor am I quite that good. Yet. Let’s refresh my memory shall we?

But first…What exactly IS a sun sign?

Sun Signs

When someone asks you “What’s your sign”, it usually refers to your sun sign, as opposed to your moon sign, rising sign and subsequent ascendants (Which I will go into detail with a little later). But that doesn’t mean much to you if you have no idea what a sun sign actually is, let alone what yours might be. Allow me to explain.

The term ‘sun sign‘ refers to which sign the sun passed through on your exact date of birth. This annual journey of the sun is called the ecliptic, and on this journey, the sun passes through all twelve signs of the Zodiac. Those being (in order): Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces.

To determine which sign you fall under, it usually only requires that you know the date of your birth. However, there are cases when knowing the exact time of your birth becomes crucial information. Such as when you are born on the exact day that the sun shifts into a new sign, which is referred to as the cusp.

If You Were Born… Then You Are A(n)….

March 21st-April 20th                                     Aries

April 21st-May 21st                                           Taurus

May 22nd-June21st                                          Gemini

June 22nd-July 23rd                                        Cancer

July 24th-August 23rd                                     Leo

August 24th-September 23rd                        Virgo

September 24th- October 23rd                      Libra

October 24th-November 22nd                       Scorpio

November 23rd-December 2st                       Sagittarius

December 22nd-January 20th                        Capricorn

January 21st-February 19th                            Aquarius

February 20th-March 20th                              Pisces

But wait, there is more…

My sun sign is Scorpio, my moon sign is Gemini, and my rising sign is, once again, Scorpio.

Did I lose any of you just now? Sorry. You see, your sun sign is just one of many that contributes to your personality as a whole. In fact, you sun sign is thought to represent your conscious ego, the expression of your ‘Self’, your personal power, leadership qualities, health, vitality. As the ever handy-dandy Wikipedia put it, any area that allows you to “shine” is thought to be heavily influences by your sun sign.

On the other hand, your Moon sign is said to be associated with your emotional make-up,  subconscious habits, memories, moods, and your ability to react and adapt to the people around you. So if you don’t feel “at one” with your sun sign, it may just be that you are more influenced by the moon or the other nine planets. Because they do play key factors in what mutes or magnifies the traits of your sun sign.

Now, I could geek nonsensical for days about what each and every planet is said to contribute to the vast complex personality that makes you…well, you. But I might end up boring you to death and that is not the objective. I’m also not, by any means, an expert on the subject. I just happen to take a great interest in it-specifically the psychology behind it. I can’t tell you why your Horoscope isn’t accurate. I can’t tell you the exact time that the sun shifts into each sign on any given day or any given year. I can’t tell you how to make your own natal chart. (I can point you in the right direction though). I can’t even tell you why Aries is the first sign when, I would have thought that Aquarius would be the most logical decision as the sun shifts into it around the beginning of the year. (And if anyone does know, feel free to put me in my place. Like I said, I’m not an expert, and I love learning new things, so feel free to drop me a line or comment.)

I can tell you the general overview of your sun sign, moon sign, and rising sign though, if you provide me with your date, basic time frame and location of your birth. If you’re a writer, or interested in the writing process though, I can also tell you how these can be used as great tools for inspiration especially where characters and their motivations are concerned, along with a lot of other neat things. Of course, this being the introductory post, I had to get all the generalities out of the way.

So if you have any general questions, feel free to comment here. Don’t be shy, I don’t bite. Can’t promise anything in the stinging variety thought.

What? I did warn all of you that I was a Scorpio.

Hah! Of course you’re a Scorpio! I gravitate to Scorpios like you would not believe — my husband is a Scorpio, my best friend from college is a Scorpio, an alarming number of my current friends are Scorpios… and everyone else important in my life is another water sign. 😀 (Can you guess which one I am?)

Neat post, Soleil! Can’t wait to read more!

See, with your dates, I’m not a Gemini at all. (May 21st) I usually read both Taurus and Gemini because of that, but neither ever really fit.

My sun sign is Pisces and other than the creative aspects it doesn’t fit me AT ALL. I’ve never actually heard of a moon sign before. Just looked mine up and apparently I’m a Taurus there. Or a Gemini…another site said that. I must be a cusper with Feb. 22, 1980.

Bethanie- I have the same gravitation towards Virgos, Geminis, Libras and Leos.

Hmm, Bethanie, Bethanie. From what I’ve seen of you in your posts you have a headstrong no-nonsense type of personality-that I rather like. I would peg you as a fire sign, but then I know that at times fire and water are a hell of a lot alike. I would say Sagittarius. But I went to your blogspot profile and see that I am dead wrong. *laughs* You’re the first Cancer I’ve consciously met.

Joely- The weird thing is, in two of my books on the subject, I got conflicting dates. I wasn’t sure which one to use at first but ended up choosing the one from my “old school” book. *g* On Wikipedia they have the exact time stamp that the sun shifts into each sign. But I’m always a little wary about trusting Wikipedia. Call me cynical. But if it helps, it says that the Sun goes into the Gemini on May 22 at 1:40 pm. So, by those measures, you would indeed be a Taurus but I would like to help you investigate this further though.

Kait- You’re also the first Pisces I’ve met. I think having an Earth sign like Taurus would “ground” the rather intense emotional aspects of the water signs without absorbing your creativity with it. Just an observation.

For some odd reason, I can’t get on your blog. GAH. I’m being deprived of a good read!

I’m a Virgo-Libra cusp. Joely, you’re a Tarus-Gemini cusp, which is why neither really fits.

I’ve never heard of the moon or rising signs. How do you find those?

Jess- I used this I hope it will be helpful to you.

My sun sign is Pisces, my moon sign is Aquarius, and (if I read it right) my rising sign is Gemini. Some of it made sense, and some no longer applies, and some was just out there. 🙂
    P.S. I was born on February 20.

I’m the first Cancer you’ve met?! LOL! That’s hysterical to me, considering how strongly I gravitate to other water signs! (Both of my sisters are Pieces!)

So is Libra a fire sign? According to the link you have above, both my moon and ascendent signs are Libra… Although when I calculated all this years ago, I’m pretty sure one or the other was Cancer… I could have been wrong, though, because I think I did it myself…

Ann- Thank you for stopping by. I find a lot of details about my signs are either dead on or way off with no middle ground.

Bethanie- Libra is an Air sign. 😉
