Thursday Thirteen #5
Thursday Thirteen
Thirteen things I’ve learned about wolves over the last two days
Cause I’m a geek
1. Their pelt colors vary more than just about any other species.
2. They rely more on their hearing and sense of smell than anything else.
3. They walk on their toes rather than the complete sole of the foot.
4. Have four toes on their hind paws and five in the front, but one never touches the ground.
5. Can maintain a chase at 25 miles per hour for about 20 minutes.
6. They are able to make emotional attachments and it is, infact, crucial to their survival.
7. They do however reach a certian age where they become less inclinded to make attachments with those they have not already done so with and unfamilair parties.
8. The average weight for a male is 90-100 lbs, the average weight for a female is 80-85 lbs
9. The largest wolf on record was a male weighing in at 175.
10. Average hieght for male (from nose to tail-tip) is 5.0-6.5 ft. Average height for a female is 4.5-6.0 ft.
11.Their tails account for 13-20 in.
12. They have forty teeth.
13. Their incisors are two and a quarter inches long, including the part that is embedded in the jaw.

You aren’t as far behind as I am.
If you’re trying to learn about wolves for your novel, the hardest part of the job will be learning to understand them, especially as they’d interact with humans. I don’t know if it is in print, but if not your library can probably get it for you on ILL (interlibrary loan): read Never Cry Wolf by Farley Mowat, a factual account of a personal relationship between wolf and human. You may well need or want much more, but I read the book years ago and I’m sure it will help you.
